Modern and ancient tidal sedimentary systems in the era of energy transition

2024

Editors: S.G. Longhitano, V.M. Rossi, D. Chiarella

This volume collects scientific articles deriving from oral and poster works presented during the 10th International Congress of Tidal Sedimentology (Tidalites 2022 - Matera, Italy, 3-5 May). The volume also includes additional contributions offering an up-to-date overview of the research activity in the field of the Tidal Dynamics and Sedimentology of modern and ancient environments.

Case studies are provided by international groups of scientists that apply conventional and advanced approaches of investigation in the quali-quantitative analysis of tidal processes and relative sedimentary products. Some articles derives from the work of researches that apply scientific advancements in the field of tidal sedimentology for optimizing the exploitation of conventional energy resources and the production of renewable power in modern tidal environments.

Straits and seaways: controls, processes and implications in modern and ancient systems

2022

Editors: V.M. Rossi, S.G. Longhitano, C. Olariu, F.L. Chiocci

Straits and seaways are the key features that connect oceans, seas and lakes. They regulate water, sediment and biota exchanges, and influence local and global climate. A good understanding of the dynamic evolution of straits and seaways is therefore fundamental to accurately reconstruct the palaeogeography, tectonics, palaeoecology and stratigraphy of interconnected basins, the climate dynamics of Earth’s past as well as to exploit both conventional and renewable energy resources. This volume provides a comprehensive collection of articles dealing with both ancient and modern case studies, bringing together different but complementary disciplines, such as marine geology, process sedimentology and stratigraphy. With the contents encompassing the evolution, geomorphology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, oceanography and palaeogeography of straits and seaways, and their influence on climate, the book will be of interest to Earth scientists working in many fields.

Sedimentology in Italy

2017

Editors: S.G. Longhitano, R.J. Steel, L. Pomar

The special issue collects sixteen original research articles focused on the application of classical and new analytical approaches to a variety of Sedimentology studies. These are presented here by groups of researchers whose activity is prevalently based in Italy or the Italian territory. Many of the topics included in the present volume were preliminarily introduced during a workshop held at the University of Basilicata, Potenza, southern Italy, in 2016. The meeting was organized on the occasion of the visit at the Department of Sciences of the University of Basilicata of the second guest editor of the volume, and was aimed at creating presentations and discussions to share the latest science news, scientific breakthroughs and discoveries from a representative part of the Italian community of Sedimentologists.

Modern and ancient tidal depositional systems: perspectives, models and signatures

2012

Editors: S.G. Longhitano, D. Mellere, R.B. Ainsworth

In early 2008, we organized a session dedicated to the most recent advances in tidal Sedimentology at the unforgettable IAS meeting held in Alghero, Sardinia, The session aimed to provide an overview of the most original and latest scientific results deriving from many research groups working around the world. The high scientific value of all the presentations and the very exciting and fruitful discussions among all the researchers involved, encouraged us to propose that some of the works presented be published in a special issue of Sedimentary Geology. The present volume collects 10 works deriving from very different research experiences on tidal depositional systems. The results represent significant advances in new approaches to the study of tidal dynamics, documenting and discussing case studies deriving from ancient successions and modern settings.
